Kufunikira Tailoring School
Kufunikira Tailoring School is a partnership program with YWAM Milala and Sowing Faith International. Our goal is work with vulnerable women in poor communities across Malawi to help them learn valuable tailoring skills to provide for their families while also sharing the Gospel of Jesus Christ.
Kufunikira Tailoring School
Kufunikira means to be successful or worthy in Chichewa, our local language in Malawi. We named our tailoring school Kufunikira because it is our mission that our students feel worthy and valuable as human beings in our courses. So often in poverty, self worth is not evident, and many times our students come to us struggling with their own self worth. It is our goal that they leave our classes knowing their value as women, as Malawians, and as women created in God's own image.
Our Course
Our tailoring courses last for 10 months. We cover a variety of projects, from men's shirts and trousers, to women's skirts and dresses. Most of our students have no sewing knowledge when they begin our courses, and they will graduate with a full understanding of how to take accurate measurements, how to competently sew for someone else, and basic business practices. We equip them with all the skills and knowledge they need to begin their own tailoring shops in their home villages, allowing them to provide for their families and their children.
Sharing the Gospel
Throughout our courses, we also teach the Gospel to all our students. We follow a program that explains who Jesus is, what our purpose is as children of God, the Holy Spirit, and how to live a Christian life. Throughout these themes, we also study women of the Bible who embody these teachings. All our students are given weekly homework of Scripture to read at home, a new Bible verse to memorize weekly, and they are required to share their Bible lessons with someone else in their village. It is always our goal to share the love of Jesus with them, and empower them to share the love of Jesus to their communities.
Get involved!
Sponsor a tailoring student! It cost's about $500 per student to put them through an entire 10 month course. With these funds, we will be able to provide all their sewing supplies during the course, Bibles for each student, notebooks, pens, and any practical needs they may have during our lessons. We will also give each student a sewing machine when they graduate, so they will have all their tools to start their business. You can sponsor an individual student with a $500 one time gift, or you can also do a monthly donation of $43 a month.
